Revolutionizing Cross-Border Travel: Aedas' Award-Winning Design

HK Port Passenger Clearance Building: A New Gateway for Hong Kong

Unveiling the design marvel of the HK Port Passenger Clearance Building (PCB), a cross-border crossing facility that redefines travel. Designed by the renowned Aedas, this architectural masterpiece serves as a new 'front door' for Hong Kong.

The PCB is a hub of activity, constantly bustling with people arriving and departing by various modes of transport. It stands as a testament to the vibrancy of Hong Kong, a global and metropolitan city. The design of the PCB was inspired by its dynamic surroundings, enveloped by water and offering views of a natural skyline of evergreen mountains and hills. The elegant modular roof form, which lends itself to offsite pre-fabrication, has enabled an efficient construction process, achieving a very high level of quality.

The PCB is part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, a large sea-crossing that links Hong Kong with Zhuhai City and Macao. It serves as a transportation hub, providing clearance facilities for goods and passengers using the bridge. The objective of the HKBCF is to create a new landmark building that reflects the vibrancy of Hong Kong and serves as a gateway to the western part of the Pearl River Delta via the HZMB.

The building is sheltered by a wave-form roof that spans 310 metres in length and 162 metres in width. The structure is composed of steelwork and is zoned into a series of structured bays. These bays are supported by a casting system with arms that hold up the structure and span 36m by 18m. This unique design sets the PCB apart from other buildings and strengthens its position as a landmark.

The PCB is located on an artificial island of approximately 150 hectares, reclaimed from the open waters off the northeast of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). It boasts good air, road, rail, and sea transportation connectivity. The project commenced in December 2010 and was officially opened in October 2018.

This design marvel has not gone unnoticed in the architectural world. The PCB was awarded Platinum in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. This prestigious accolade recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and make the world a better place.

In conclusion, the HK Port Passenger Clearance Building, designed by Aedas, is a testament to the power of innovative design and its ability to redefine travel and transform landscapes. It stands as a symbol of Hong Kong's vibrancy and global standing, serving as a new gateway for the city and a beacon of architectural excellence.
